Singam, Constance (1936– ) The eldest of seven sisters and one brother, Singam is a feminist, writer and teacher. Her key achievements include groundbreaking research and advocacy on family violence, as president of the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE, 1987– 89 and 1994– 96) and of the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (1990– 93). Also notable is her leadership of The Working Committee (TWC, 1998– 99) to raise awareness of civil society activism; and lobbying for maids’ rights as a founding member of TWC2 (Transient Workers Count Too) in 2003.
