Salvation Army Voluntary organization whose charitable activities in Singapore include provision of nursing homes and daycare for the elderly, childcare and homes for neglected children, counselling and family services.
Founded in 1865 by Methodist minister William Booth in the United Kingdom, the Salvation Army was established in Singapore in 1935 by Brigadier Herbert Lord. Its first headquarters were on Killiney Road. A home for women was opened two years later, on Paterson Road. It catered to women who were destitute, lost or had been forced into prostitution. They were taught English and skills such as tailoring. The home developed into the Women’s Industrial Home which later relocated to River Valley Road.
As the Salvation Army’s work in Singapore expanded, its headquarters moved to the House of Tan Yeok Nee on Tank Road (later known as Clemenceau Avenue) in January 1938. The house, today a national monument, had belonged to a Teochew businessman. After 50 years there, the Salvation Army shifted its headquarters again, eventually settling into purpose- built premises in Bishan.
