Lat Pau Newspaper. Lat Pau was the first Chinese- language daily newspaper to be published in Singapore. It was started in December 1881, and was published by See Ewe Lay, scion of a wealthy Peranakan family. Profit appears not to have been a motive in the newspaper’s founding, as Lat Pau’s circulation never exceeded 550; nevertheless it was well- respected. Lat Pau survived until 1932 when, with no competent writer to take over after the death of its leading journalist, Yeh Chi- Yun, it ceased publication.
