kaya toast Popular breakfast or snack item. It consists of thinly sliced, toasted bread with butter and kaya spread on it. Kaya (meaning ‘rich’ in Malay), is a jam made from eggs, sugar, coconut cream and pandan (pandanus) leaves. It is vigorously stirred over a low fire to create the thick, creamy consistency. While kaya is associated with Peranakans, it was the Hainanese who popularized this dish in coffee shops all over Singapore. At breakfast, kaya toast is often accompanied by soft- boiled eggs. At least two popular franchises have built their reputation on kaya toast— Ya Kun Kaya Toast and Killiney Kopitiam.
