EZ- Link card Contactless card used on buses and the Mass Rapid Transit/Light Rail Transit system. Passengers tap the card against a card reader on entry and exit at the fare gates of train stations or at the doors of buses. The correct fare is deducted on a distance- related basis. Fare rebates are provided for multiple rides when passengers transfer between buses or between bus and train within stipulated periods. Personalized cards permit concession travel for senior citizens, students and national servicemen. Prior to the introduction of EZ- Link in 2002, fare cards were magnetic- strip stored- value cards. In 2005, there were 7 million EZ- Link cards in use.
