arowana (Scleropages formosus) Also known as the ‘golden dragonfish’, the arowana is not native to Singapore but is valued as an ornamental fish. Its slender body, large reflective scales and a pair of stiff barbells at the tip of its lower jaw make it resemble a Chinese dragon, and it is thus believed by some to be capable of warding off evil and bringing good fortune. The arowana can be seen in the rivers and lakes of Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. It grows to 90 cm and is a voracious predator of small fish. It is an internationally protected species, and only captive- bred arowanas can be legally traded.
